Munich Economy and Innovation

Munich is a high-value business and innovation center with a broad sector mix, strong purchasing power, low unemployment, a dense university and talent base, and particular strengths in automotive, mobility, ICT, finance, life sciences, green economy, and creative industries.

Economic Position

Munich Economic Development describes the city as both Bavaria’s capital and a national/international hub. It explicitly links Munich’s role to southern Germany’s economic strength.

The page says eight of Bavaria’s eleven DAX-listed companies are based in Munich and the surrounding area, more than in any other German urban region. As of April 2026, Munich’s DAX-listed companies accounted for over 700 billion euros, about one third of total DAX value. Munich is also described as Germany’s top-ranking city for MDAX, SDAX, and especially TecDAX-listed companies.

Labor Market and Talent

Munich’s unemployment rate was 4.5 percent in 2023, and the city has long had one of the lowest unemployment rates among major German cities. Around 148,000 students are enrolled in three large public universities and more than 25 smaller public/private higher-education institutions in Munich and the surrounding area. About 43 percent study STEM subjects, and roughly 22,000 people graduate in Munich each year.

The same source reports that around 42.4 percent of people in socially insured jobs in Munich have a university degree, the highest rate anywhere in Germany.

Sectors and Innovation

Munich’s automotive and mobility sector includes BMW, MAN, Siemens Mobility, Sixt, FlixMobility, MVG, and Stadtwerke Muenchen’s traffic operations. The official sector page says these companies are using e-mobility, digitalization, connected mobility, automated driving, and mobility services to respond to transformation.

The economy is broader than mobility. Munich Economic Development highlights ICT, life sciences/biotech/pharma, green economy, finance, cultural and creative industries, startups, and new business. The key-figures page also describes Munich as Germany’s second-most important startup hotspot after Berlin, with 215 companies founded in 2022 and seven regional startups valued at one billion dollars or more.
